Appakkudathaan Perumal Temple or Thirupper Nagar in Koviladi (Thanjavur district) on the banks of Kollidam River, 10 miles (16 km) from Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu is  a  Divya Desam  shrine - 6th in line (glorified in the 7th–9th century Vaishnava canon of Naalayera Divya Prabandam containing 33 verses)  as well as one of the five Pancharanga Kshetrams. The temple is also believed to be  a mukthi sthalam.

Built by Medieval Chola rulers at various period, the temple with three-tired  Rajagopuram is on an elevated structure and is accessed through a flight of 21 steps. There are only four daily pujas beginning  at 8:30 a.m and ending at 8 p.m. Among the four annual festivals here, the chariot festival that falls in  the Tamil month of Panguni (March–April) is a famous one.

Above image:  As you may  see in the image posted above, this temple is on a well-raised platform  above the town and to get into the temple, the devotees have to take the flight of steps. Since the town is at the lower level of  the temple, it is called  Koviladi (in Tamil  Kovil means temple and adi means  below / under)....................

This is believed to be the only Divya Desam  shrine (among the 108) where Neyyappam (a sort of food prepared in ghee) is offered to the Lord every night as neivedhyam. There is a beautiful idol of Santhana Gopalan here. There has been a strong belief that childless couples, upon  holding the small idol of Santhana Gopalakrishnan, sincerely praying and offering butter with sugar to the  deity at the temple  will be  blessed with children.

This temple can be accessed from Thanjavur city on the Tiruchi- Thanjavur bus route via the famous Kallanai (2nd century AD water diversion dam - the oldest in the world!!) constructed by the great early Chola ruler Karikala Cholan who ruled this part with justice.
